Hunting the Ketzeback Line: Part 1 – The Direct Line

Christoph Ketzeback (Katzbach, Catchepaw, Catchepaugh, etc.) was born about 1700, probably in Germany, no information about death or burial. Sometime between 1725 and 1727 he married Alida (last name unknown) who was born about 1702 probably in Germany, no information about death or burial. Christoph and Alida were the parents of Henrich and perhaps other children about whom no information has been found to date. [There is no solid evidence for these people, only various on-line family trees, which while helpful and definitely clues they are included for that reason.]

Henrich Ketzeback (Katzbach, Catchepaw, Catchepaugh, etc.) was born about 1737 in Germany and died in November 1815 in Sorel, Montérégie, Quebec, Canada. He was a Palatine German, came to America at the behest of the English and moved to Canada, with his family, as a Loyalist at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. On Friday, 12 October 1759 in Kinderhook, Columbia, New York, he married Eva DeFoe (Defoe, DeVoe, Devoe) who was born 14 April 1740 in Rhinebeck, Dutchess, New York. She was the daughter of Abraham DeFoe and Anna Maria Catharina Reiffenberger. Henrich and Eva were the parents of at least seven children, Christoffer Catchepaw, Abraham Ketzeback, Marie Catharina Ketzeback, Aletteke Ketzeback, Johannes Ketzeback, unnamed daughter Ketzeback and Heinrick Ketzeback.

Johannes Ketzeback (Katzbach, Catchepaw, Catchepaugh, etc.) was born Tuesday, 30 April 1771 in , , New York and died Saturday, 14 May 1853 in Bromont, Shefford, Quebec, Canada at 82 years, 0 months, 14 days of age. In about 1798 in , , , Canada he married Rachel Griggs who was born after 1770 and died in , , Quebec, Canada. Johannes and Rachel were the parents of at least one child, Henry Ketzeback and maybe Abraham Ketzeback. In about 1802 he married Elizabeth Hammond who was born after 1774 in , , Massachusetts. Johannes and Elizabeth were the parents of three or four children, maybe Abraham Ketzeback, Benjamin Ketzeback, William Ketzeback and James Ketzeback.

Henry Ketzeback was born Saturday, 18 April 1801 in Shefford, Shefford, Quebec, Canada and died Tuesday, 20 September 1881 in Alton, Waseca, Minnesota at 80 years 5 months, 2 days of age and was buried in Alma City Cemetery, Janesville, Waseca, Minnesota (Find A Grave Memorial No. 31280730). In about 1828 he married Mary Burnham who was born Saturday, 04 October 1806 in Shefford, Shefford, Quebec, Canada and died Thursday, 11 September 1862 in Janesville, Waseca, Minnesota at 55 years, 11 months, 7 days of age and was buried in Alma City Cemetery, Janesville, Waseca, Minnesota (Find A Grave Memorial No. 31280747). She was the daughter of John Burnham and Martha (last name unknown). Henry and Mary were the parents of at least three children, George M. Ketzeback, John Franklin Ketzeback and William Henry Ketzeback.

John Franklin Ketzeback was born Sunday, 18 August 1833 in Shefford, Shefford, Quebec, Canada and died Monday, 09 March 1914 in Janesville, Waseca, Minnesota at 80 years, 6 months, 19 days of age and was buried in Janesville Cemetery, Janesville, Waseca, Minnesota (Find A Grave Memorial No. 117807481). On Monday, 26 September 1864 in Granby, Montérégie, Quebec, Canada he married Margaret Comb Griggs who was born Monday, 27 July 1846 in Shefford, Shefford, Quebec, Canada and died Wednesday, 19 February 1930 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois at 83 years, 6 months, 23 days of age. She was the dauther of Abram Griggs and Maggie (last name unknown). John Franklin and Margaret Comb were the parents of seven children, Emily C. Ketzeback, Henry Delbert Ketzeback, John F. Ketzeback, William Alfred Ketzeback, Sorman A. Kezeback, Margaret Mae Ketzeback and Edward Bert Ketzeback.

Margaret Mae Ketzeback was born Friday, 11 January 1889 in , , Minnesota and died in January 1978 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois at 88-89 years of age. On Saturday, 10 April 1909 she married John Henry Carl Ernst who was born Wednesday, 12 August 1891 in Clarion, Wright, Iowa to Charles Ernst and Jennie Carl. The marriage ended in divorce about 1911-1912. Margaret Mae and John Henry Carl were the parents of Margaret Pearl Ernst who was born Tuesday, 08 August 1911 in Boone, Boone, Iowa and died in January 1978 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. On Thursday, 31 May 1917 probably in Chicago, Cook, Illinois she married Roy LeSourd Bennage, he was born Monday, 15 May 1882 in Marionville, Lawrence, Missouri and died Wednesday, 01 September 1965 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois at 83 years, 3 months, 17 days of age, the marriage was without issue.) He was the son of Franklin Pierce Bennage and Viola Belle Slade. Hewas from an interesting line, however I will not be posting on this line. He was Margaret Pearl’s step-father, as far as I have been able to find he did not adopt her, even though she is listed with his surname in the 1920 U.S. Census.

 

The number of Ketzeback descendants is huge, with the variants in spelling have made following some of them challenging. The collateral lines are actively being researched, and any information about any of the Ketzeback lines would be welcome.
