Hunting the Ernst Line: Part 5 – The Collateral Lines

Philip Ernst was born in 1862 in , , Illinois and died in 1934 in Woodstock, Pipestone, Minnesota at 72-73 years of age and was buried in Woodstock Cemetery, Woodstock, Pipestone, Minnesota (Find A Grave Memorial No.67548283). According to the best available information he never married or had children, farmed all his life and shared his home with his mother until her death, his brother and nephew.

Caroline Ernst was born Monday, 24 December 1860 or Saturday, 24 December 1859 in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois and died Thursday, 23 May 1929 in Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa at 68 years, 4 months, 29 days of age (as stated in her obituary) and was buried Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa (Find A Grave Memorial No. 52046255). On Monday, 07 February 1881 in Klinger, Bremer, Iowa she married Charles F. Leibert who was born Friday, 14 February 1834 in Berlin, , Preussen, Germany and died Friday, 02 April 1915 in Klinger, Bremer, Iowa at 81 years, 1 month, 19 days of age and was buried in Gresham Cemetery, Bennington, Black Hawk, Iowa (Find A Grave Memorial No. 24315783). Caroline and Charles F. did not have issue, however he did have children from his first marriage, they lived for a while in Wisconsin then moved back to Iowa. Caroline had a child in 1879, there is no record of marriage and the following year she was working as a servant for the George L. White family in her home town of Barclay, Black Hawk, Iowa. The 1880 U.S. Census notes that there is a 1 year old granddaughter living with Caroline’s parents, Lewis and Christina Ernst. The name is given as Maggie Ernst. (Caroline’s daughter was named Ada J. Cormst. There is no one by the name of Cormst in Barclay that I have been able to find and I suspect it is a misreading of Ernst in the handwritten documents, I have seen no images of them so it is speculation but something I have found to happen though. A case in point being the 1900 U. S. Census where Ada is transcribed as Ida, but when the digital image is examined it is very obvious that the first letter of her name is “A” not “I”.). There may or may not have been a marriage, but up until marriage to Charles F. Leibert there is no evidence of one. The granddaughter, Maggie, is not a child traceable to any of the other Ernst children. I suspect, with no solid proof, that Maggie is Ada J., that Caroline had an illegitimate child and her parents were caring for her while her mother worked to help provide for her. After the death of Charles F. Leibert, Caroline lived with her daughter and son-in-law until her death.

Ada J. Cormst was born in April 1879 or possibly 1880 in Ames, Story, Iowa (according to one of her marriage records – there is no father listed, just her mother as Carrie Cormst) and died in 1961 in Fairbanks, Buchanan, Iowa at 81-83 years of age and was buried in Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa (Find A Grave Memorial No. 60900738). On Wednesday, 14 February 1900 in , Bremer, Iowa she married John Frederick Heck who was born Wednesday, 14 July 1875 in , , Iowa and died in February 1965 in Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa at 89 years of age and was buried in Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa (Find A Grave Memorial No. 60900728). He was the son of Christian Heck and Litzie Britchour. He was working as a janitor for the Fairbank High School when he registered for the World War I draft, he was described as of medium height, medium build, brown eyes and balding grayish red hair. Ada J. and John Frederick were the parents of two children.

Rayburn K. Heck was born in 1901 in Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa and died in 1938 in Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa at 36-37 years of age and was buried in Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa (Find A Grave Memorial No. 60900544). In about 1934 he married Vera G. (last name unknown). They were the parents of one child.

Vernetta E. Heck was born Monday,01 June 1903 in Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa and died Saturday, 28 March 1992 in Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa at 88 years, 9 months, 27 days of age and is buried in Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa (Find A Grave Memorial No. 47801933). On Monday, 24 August 1925 in Independence, Buchanan, Iowa she married Kenneth Vivian Burnett who was born Wednesday, 08 September 1897 probably in , , Iowa and died Saturday, 15 August 1981 in Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa at 83 years, 11 months, 7 days of age and is buried in Fairbank Cemetery, Fairbank, Buchanan, Iowa (Find A Grave Memorial No. 47801926). He was the son of J. B. Burnett and Eliza Busbby. He was noted as a painter and decorator on the 1940 U. S. Census. Vernetta E. and Kenneth Vivian were the parents of three sons. Two of whom are now deceased.

If anyone does have information about the Ernst line, it would be appreciated if you’d let me know.
